Video games are being played more and more over the years. Playing outside and reading is getting old so kids are spending almost the same amount of time playing video games as they do at school. So, nowadays video games are being introduced into schools as a part of education with which kids could learn everything from history to math.
Back in the days
Not so long ago, the school kids all over the world couldn’t wait to go outside and have some fun with their friends. As the time passed, rules have changed and computers and video games became one of the biggest sources of fun, and afterwards maybe even an education. It was noticed that children can learn so much by playing video games. Games get them excited, competitive, motivated, emotional, passionate etc. For example, memory games on your computer with different objects, shapes and colors were very interesting and educational. They are good for developing memory, observation and, of course, having fun.
Some of the games have been made for schools where the players would be rewarded for solving problems, completing missions, which means they have a system which can be based on points, achievements, unlocking new material, moving to another level, etc. Children are concentrated on the tasks they are given and these teach a systematic way of thinking. They can also enhance reaction-based skills when the students are presented with something unknown to them. One study showed that playing a video game as a part of a class, as well as exercises that combine the game and class material, can influence the performance of the student and his/her engagement. Also, it can influence the critical way of thinking among students.
Impact on learning skills
Two of the most popular games that have been introduced in the classroom are Minecraft and SimCity. Those games have shown us that video games can also be involved in education through traditional educational objectives such as ecology, math, physics, history, etc. MinecraftEdu, is an educational version of Minecraft, a sandbox construction game in which players are in interaction with the game world by placing and breaking blocks in a 3D environment and building creative structures, buildings and artwork. According to Joel Levin, one of the creators of MinecraftEdu, this game can allow students to “explore empathy, cooperation, and leadership”.
Video game class in history
One of the games that also have an influence on educating is Assassin’s Creed. It relies on historical accuracy, in which historians and linguists are consulted. All the locations and historical figures were carefully analyzed and written, the architecture of the cities, every balcony, street and even the tasks are related to the historical facts from the middle ages, through the Third Crusade and so on. Moreover, we also have video games like Poptropica Mythology Island which are also concentrated on historical education among the students.
Some of the teachers don’t agree with learning through video games, also, some of the teachers don’t have any experience in using video games as an educational tool. Also, teachers think that video games can lead to an addiction thus making the students unwilling to go back to the traditional education. Some schools are not all prepared yet for this kind of learning, they don’t have the right computer equipment, software, or maybe not even an Internet connection. Students should not spend so much time in front of the computer screen but they should have more physical activities and have a piece of paper and a book in front of them.
Times are changing and you have to adjust to modern ways of thinking, fashion, music, world, education. Although you sometimes think that video games are not so good for your children, just imagine that one day they may be an important factor in education and that learning would be easier with them.
